Sammich with homegrown sprouts

Our Saturday breakfast prepared by chenyee.

Black-peppered egg and cheese sammich with broccoli sprouts.

The organic sprouts were from our own garden. :)

This is how we grow the sprouts at our balcony.

  1. how do you grow the broccoli sprout? i bought the seed from justlife and grew in glass jar but found the water was turbid (yellowish) when rinsed it around the 4th day. is it normal or actually the sprouts rotted?

    1. Hi,

I've added in the photo on how we grow the sprouts. We use pot and soil instead of a container. So I'm not sure if your way is right. you can read online, or feel free to ask the retail assistants in Justlife. I think they're quite informative. :)

      Cheers!

    1. Hi, I asked Justlife staff about this matter. You only soak the seeds for one day, and after that no soaking anymore & only rinse the sprouts once a day right?
If you way is right, then should be ok already. :)

      Had you eaten the sprouts?

  3. hi, i soaked the seed overnight (10hrs) then rinse 4 times a day, i have done the similar for mung bean and it grow well. maybe the broccoli prefer drier condition. next time i will try to rinse once a day. hopefully it can success.
i have not taste the broccoli sprout yet.

  4. i tried again by rinsing once a day but still fail. last 2 days asked the justlife's staff in the garden and was told to rinse every 4-hour. the broccoli seed is very sensitive to water.
so, now i'd like to grow it with soil. can you describe the step?
need to leave the pot in dark place? water how many times a day?
cover the seed with a thin layer of soil?
    thanks

  5. chenyee is answering here: I am a justlife staff and this was my first time sprouting anything. I only watched a few youtube videos on sprouting before I started this, so I can't give my best advice, I am only experimenting up to this stage :P

What I did was I soaked the seeds in filtered water overnight, drained it the next day and soaked again for some time. Initially I wanted to sprout them in the jar but I got lazy because I would need to store them in the fridge and rinse them a few times daily. Since I have a vacant pot of soil I just tossed all the seeds onto the soil and waited what happen in a few days time. I sprayed water over it once in the morning and once at night.

The pot was placed at my balcony where it received plenty of sunlight during daytime. I didn't cover it too.

2-3 days later it started sprouting. I continued watering through spraying (gentler to the sprouts I guess) and observe the growth every morning before I left to work and again at night. In a few days time they grew into a mini sprout forest like shown in the photo. In a about 10 day' time some parts of the sprout were ready for harvest! That is when the leaves are still in round shape. Another week later, some real leaves would grow and probably that is not suitable for eating anymore.

My advice for sprouting on soil is, space them when you place the seeds, mine was too crowded some of the growing sprouts couldn't reach to the top and they rot in among the taller sprouts. It would also be easier for you to cut them while harvesting. Hope this helps :)

    1. thanks a lot for your sharing. so, if sprouting in jar, it needs to be refrigerated after each rinsing? before that i just left it at room temperature. maybe this is another cause to my failed sprouting.

    2. Hi, we are not too sure about that too as that was the info we found online. Maybe trial and error helps. :)
      Happy sprouting, anyway!

  6. hi, would like to share with you my recent sprouting trial:
day 1 - soaked the broccoli seed at night
day 2 - took few soaked seed and tossed into soil. the rest left in jar and put in fridge.
day 3 - seed in soil sprouted (yellow head and tiny body, like a ','). seed in the jar did not sprout. thus it had been moved out of fridge.
day 4 - seed in soil started to growth where the head turn to leaf, but most of it was rotting. half of the seed in jar sprouted. half not.
day 5 - few sprout in soil had turned green. seed in jar which had sprouted keep growing. the other half of the seed had broke the outer skin where the yellow head can be seen.
day 6 - sprout in soil (which had not rotted) seem like stopped growing. half sprout in jar grew till look like what it is in this picture (https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR5Yu-mcL4lwv9Wraz4diE-V4RdgKYWe4QbVqR0Q3UfgMm85Hl05A). the other half still remained the same and started rotting.
day 7 - both sprout in soil and jar seemed like not growing anymore, still same like in day 6 while rotting was taking place. i tasted 3 sprout in soil and 3 in jar. though the physical not the same, sprout in jar was not leafy and tinier than the soil, but both taste like wasabi.

not sure whether this is the actual taste of the broccoli seed sprouts. the changes i made this time for sprouting in jar is, no covered up, when drained the water after each rinsing, i did not shake the jar vigorously (i think this is 1 factor which affected the sprouting in jar in my previous trial since the sprout is tiny and weak).
