PIK NIK, Penang

PIK NIK never fails to impress me so far, there's one big chunk of salmon inside the puff!
Coffee is good too, which they had already surprised me on my first visit (as I thought hipster cafe know).

I'm happy with the service too, attentive and friendly. :)

Cinnamon roll 3.0

I made cinnamon roll 3 days in a roll (I mean row)~

They look better than the first batch, isn't it?
Well, they do taste better too. :)
I'll keep making until I got it right.

A sudden urge to make cinnamon roll on Christmas eve, yeah why not.
And this is the first time I tried making one too.

Breakfast with mum's garden view

It's a fortunate thing to have a breakfast moment like this.
I love my mum's back lane garden very much.

Picking ripen mulberries is an enjoyable thing to do.
We have so much that I picked twice a day when I was on my a week holiday at home.

Doesn't mulberry tree look like Christmas to you?
The green and red colours help. :)

Winter solstice -new flavour

Making glutinous rice balls for Winter Solstice is a must for us.
It's also the time we have fun trying out new colouring ingredient for the rice balls.

Apart from the usual 3 colours balls (white is the original, clitoria flower for the blue, and red/purple using beetroot), we tried something crazy.

That's coffee flavour for the bottom ones. ;D

After boiling in water, they turned darker in colour that makes them look like dark chocolate.
We pair them with soy milk and they do taste like bubble tea.

This time of the year is the time for the family to have reunion.
Not sure if I heard it correctly, for Chinese it also means that we are now one year older.

2015 is approaching, Happy New Year (soon) people!

Roast Factor Glee for Christmas

My first time tasting tebirkes. It's a scandinavian style of croissant, according to the barista.
I can taste a little sweetness under that crispy layers of dough, I supposed the sweetness is from marzipan (a confection consisting primarily of sugar or honey and almond meal, sometimes augmented with almond oil or extract wikipedia).
Love it, thanks to the barista's recommendation.

Check the lovely Christmas decor in the cafe too.

Tea time by myself at The Dining Cafe -p.a.t.h.

I hardly stay longer than a week in SP since I came to Klang Valley to earn a living. Apart from Chinese new year, I normally stay for 1-3 days only for each trip.

Last month I was back in SP for a friend's wedding. I decided to stay for a week since my busy working weeks was over.

That's when I had time to visit my favourite cafe in town. It's been quite long since my last visit.

豆原 Typica Ampang

A hidden charm in a Chinese village somewhere in Ampang.
It's not really visible with signage and it's a wooden single storey house by road side.

As soon as we entered the compound, we were welcomed with serenity and calming environment.
I love how the tree being positioned near the entrance, filtering the dining area from the opening.
Mind you that it is without air-conditioning, but if you like natural breeze you will enjoy it.
I bet the ambiance at night would be great too.

Nordic Bakery, London

Nordic Bakery is my nearest Scandinavian dream so far. :)

I came to Dorset St outlet on my first day arriving in London, it was 15minutes to 6pm and they closed at 6pm.
So I tried again on the 3rd day.

It wasn't my lucky day as the famous cinnamon bun had already sold out.
I had raspberry & blueberry oatbake instead.
It was quite filling and tasted good too. But my aim is still the cinnamon bun. ;)

Of course I won't give up since I still had a few days in London.
So I went again after a few days, I did take-away.
It was gooooood~

So I came AGAIN before I left for Paris. hehe.

Well well, I love this place!
And the blue colour~
I was about to bring back the recipe book too but I didn't want to burden myself with the load, so I thought if I still keen I shall buy it online.

Flingstones Cafe, SS15

Another new cafe in town in this very hip area, where houses a few colleges in walking distance.
A very good location I must say.

Flingtones Cafe just opened for business 2 weeks ago, so still serving coffee and cakes only.

 Piccolo latte by Jase.

Congratulations on the opening and I'm waiting for the kitchen to open and serve hot food soon. ;)

Map's, Bandar Sunway

In this full-of-cafe-zone that is Sunway/Subang area, I've finally paid a visit to this 4 months old cafe near to Sunway Pyramid.
I hardly explore the area so when I go there I'll try to find a cafe to try.

Homemade bread

After a month of trial and error, I slowly found some tricks in treating the bread starter and dough. Also after some good advices from Mr Martin of White Bricks Oven.
So I have a better ciabata today.

Like my pottery teacher said, work with the clay and not work on the clay. I guess it goes the same to the bread.

 Ciabata today.

 Last week's.

Odd shape bagels, haha.
My fault as I let them stick to the plate before sending them into boiling water. ;P

Dotz Cafe, Kota Kemuning

My sketch doesn't do justice to the yummy baguette. XD

Dotz Cafe, a little cafe hiding in Kota Kemuning. They has been in the business for a few years, but I only made it there last month. Well, K. Kemuning is far from where I usually hang out.
But I can say it's a neighbourhood cafe to the community, friendly and cosy.

Do check them out when you are in the area.

Open Coop /Pussy Galore, Amsterdam Noord

I stumbled upon this place when I was on my way to 3d Print Canal House.
So after my visit to the exhibition, I came back here for lunch.

They serve food ala canteen style.
Just go to the counter and choose what you like to have, pay and bring food to your preferred seat, and eat!

 Cucumber cold soup, awesome!
I had bread and salad to go with it.

What I've brought back from Europe trip

I always bring something edible from my trip. Jam, dried food and coffee are normally in the list.

Organic fig spread bought from Whole Foods Market.
Ecoficus -cranberry and goji flavour, both from a cheese store in Zaanse Schans.

Very nice illustration on canned fish fillet from Waitrose London. For friends.

Whimsical -Gelateria & Caffe

I don't remember how's the taste of the food, but the cheerful colour combination of the utensils is quite memorable.
All at Whimsical with makan gang. :)

Homemade sourdough

I've been baking some flat breads (unintentionally) for a few times in these few weeks.
Still edible, but you know how would one feel when seeing the bakes didn't rise well.

This time I tried to use my own raisin yeast water to make the leaven.
I wasn't sure if it would work, but I just experiment.

It didn't rise much during the first round.
But I guess stretch and fold helps, the final rise before baking was looking good.

Puffy this time!

Although it didn't bear the best result (very light in weight and too soft and airy inside), but seeing it risen well, I'm still happy!

Sunday tea time at White Brick Oven

First time coming all the way to White Brick Oven although I've been a fan of Mr Martin's artisan bread since my sis worked with Justlife.

The scones were as good as usual (when I said it's the best scone so far), but I must say I love the focaccia!

I hope one day I could bake well too. :)

Roast Factor, Bandar Utama

It's just right behind my condo where I can easily reach by foot or bicycle.
But it was my first visit after its opening for half a year.

Dark chocolate salted caramel roasted peanut cheese cake.
I was asked for comment on the cake as it was their first bake.
It's rich with salted caramel (which I love) and the whole thing was a great package!
Not too sweet and not too creamy rich.
The only down side is the base was a little too soft to hold the cake that it collapsed easily. (well, that doesn't affect the taste la)

I'm glad to have this cafe in my neighbourhood.
I always believe there should be one neighbourhood cafe to serve the community.
I shall find my own sweet spot here soon.

Bagels & Beans, Amsterdam

I had whole wheat bagel with tuscany (cream cheese), sundried tomatoes, black tapenade, pine nuts and basil.
Everything was good, especially the tomatoes were awesome!
It's the way I like -slightly chewy and natural sweetness.

Check out the website -Bagels & Beans for more info as they have a few franchises.

Bread baking class -e5 Bakehouse

I got to know about e5 Bakehouse through a list of bakeries provided by a friend when she got to know I was going to Europe.
Browsing the webpage and found out about the baking class, I got interested in their bread baking class. I registered for it after considering that I had a loose plan and could fit it in.

I went for a Thursday class which was the second I arrived in London.
Finding it was quite easy as the bakehouse is just right beneath the railway.
So you could feel and hear the train passing in the building. ;)

I left hostel earlier to this bakehouse, so I was the first to arrive for the class.

All ingredients, weighting scale, apron and scrapper were prepared for us.
